Claude Code Max Plan Pricing: Pro vs Max, Max 5x and Max 20x Cost per Month
$100 for Max 5x, $200 for Max 20x, monthly only. Run the money against the usage multiple, though, and the two tiers are not the same kind of purchase at all. Here is the arithmetic, and the four documented ways this plan costs more than the sticker.

The short answer
The Claude Code Max plan costs $100 a month for Max 5x and $200 a month for Max 20x, and Anthropic sells it monthly only, with no annual discount. Both tiers unlock the same models and the same Claude Code; the only thing the money buys is usage, and that usage is shared with Claude on the web, desktop, mobile and Cowork. Max 5x costs exactly the same per unit of usage as Pro billed monthly, so Max 20x is the only tier that is genuinely cheaper per unit of work.

Max 5x buys volume at full list price. Only Max 20x is actually a discount
Every comparison of these plans stops at the sticker price and tells you Max is five or twenty times Pro. Divide the yearly cost by the usage multiple and something more useful appears. Anthropic sells Pro for $200 a year if you pay up front, and sells Max monthly only, so a Max year is twelve full charges with no discount applied anywhere.

Max 5x lands on $240 per unit of Pro-equivalent usage, which is exactly what Pro costs when you pay monthly. You are buying five times the capacity at precisely list price, with no volume deal attached to it. Max 20x lands on $120, half of that, and 40% under even the discounted annual Pro seat.
The practical rule that falls out: if you are leaving Pro at all, the tier that pays for itself is 20x. Max 5x is a legitimate purchase when $200 a month is out of budget and $100 is not, but treat it as buying headroom rather than buying value. It is also worth knowing that Anthropic's documented advice when a Max 5x user keeps hitting the cap is to upgrade to 20x, so the middle tier has a way of becoming a stop on the road rather than a destination.

The Max plan is not a Claude Code plan. The quota is shared
This is the part that surprises people after they upgrade. Anthropic sells one allowance across the whole product family, and Claude Code draws from the same pool as everything else you do with Claude. In its own words, usage limits are "shared across Claude and Claude Code, meaning all activity in both tools counts against the same usage limits".

Two limits run at once against that shared pool: a session limit that resets every five hours, and a weekly limit that applies across all models and resets on a fixed day and time assigned to your account. Anthropic will not move that reset day for you. Nobody knows how many tokens Max includes, including the people quoting numbers
Search for the Max plan's token limit and you will find confident figures: 225 messages per five-hour window on Max 5x, 900 on Max 20x, various token counts. None of those are Anthropic's numbers. Anthropic publishes a multiplier and nothing else, five times or twenty times Pro usage, and it does not publish Pro's allowance as a fixed quantity either.
That is not evasiveness so much as a consequence of how the meter works. Anthropic lists the things that move your allowance: message length, file attachment size, how long the current conversation has grown, tool use such as research and web search, which model you picked, the effort level you set, and artifact creation. Caching pulls in the other direction, since content in projects does not count against your limits when it is reused and frequently repeated prompts are partially cached. Five times a moving number is still a moving number.
For buying purposes this matters more than it looks. You cannot model Max the way you would model a seat with 1,900 included credits or a plan with 1,500 agent requests a day, because there is no published quantity to model. You can only buy a tier, watch the usage bars in /usage, and adjust. Teams that need a number in a spreadsheet before they commit tend to end up on API billing for exactly this reason.
Six documented ways the Max plan costs more than $100 or $200
All six of these are in Anthropic's own documentation. None of them are hidden, and almost none of them appear in the articles currently ranking for this plan.
A stale ANTHROPIC_API_KEY silently overrides your subscription
You pay for Max and get an API bill anyway
Anthropic's wording is blunt: if that environment variable is set, "Claude Code will use this API key for authentication instead of your Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plans), resulting in API usage charges". Check it before you upgrade, not after the invoice.
The annual Pro to Max credit depends on your billing address
Up to a full year of unused Pro
Moving from annual Pro to Max returns the remaining balance as account credit, but only if the billing address matches the one on the old subscription. If it changed, Anthropic says you must cancel and wait for the term to end before subscribing to Max.
Max is monthly only, so there is no annual saving to negotiate
The difference between $200 and $240 a year on Pro, scaled up
Pro and Team both have published annual prices. Max does not. Budget $1,200 or $2,400 a year and do not wait for a yearly plan to appear at checkout.
There are no discounts and support cannot make one
Time spent asking
Anthropic states it does not offer standard discounted pricing on any paid plan including Max 5x and 20x, and that "Our Support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons". Occasional limited-time promotions are the only exception.
Buying through Google Play changes the maths
A shifted renewal date
On Google Play an upgrade charges the full price of the new plan and converts the unused value of the old one into extra days, so renewal lands later than a clean month. Anthropic also notes mobile pricing may differ from the web prices.
The weekly reset time is assigned to you, not chosen
A dead Thursday if it lands badly
Anthropic fixes your weekly reset day and time to your account and keeps it there regardless of when you subscribe. You can see the next reset under Settings then Usage, but you cannot move it.
Claude Code Max plan vs API billing
This is the comparison that decides it for most teams, and Anthropic has helpfully published the numbers for both sides. Its cost documentation states that across enterprise deployments Claude Code runs "around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month", with costs staying below $30 per active day for 90% of users.

On averages, Max 20x at $200 and API billing at $150 to $250 are close enough that the money is not the deciding factor. The shape is. $200 is the most a Max month can cost you; an API month is the middle of a distribution, and Anthropic's own figure of $30 per active day at the ninetieth percentile implies a tail above it. A Max overrun stops your work, which is an engineering problem you notice immediately. An API overrun does not stop anything, which is a finance problem you notice on the invoice.
If you do go the API route, two things in Claude Code are worth setting up before anyone starts: the /usage command for per-session tracking, and the --max-budget-usd flag, which compares against the same running total. Administrators can also install a model pricing table in managed settings so the reported figures use your contracted rates rather than list. Which Claude Code plan should you actually buy?
You hit the cap once or twice a month
Stay on Pro, billed annually
At $200 a year Pro is the cheapest Claude Code seat Anthropic sells. Occasional cap hits are cheaper to wait out than to buy away, and context discipline usually recovers more headroom than a tier change does.
You hit the cap most days, mid-session
Go straight to Max 20x
Max 5x costs the same per unit of usage as monthly Pro, so it buys you nothing but capacity at list price. Max 20x costs $120 per Pro-unit against Max 5x's $240. If you are spending anyway, spend once.
You want the smallest step up from Pro
Max 5x, with your eyes open
It is a legitimate purchase if $200 a month is out of budget and $100 is not. Just know you are buying headroom at full list price rather than a volume deal, and that Anthropic will point you at 20x the moment you hit the cap again.
You are two or more developers
Price a Team premium seat against Max 5x
Both are $100 a month. The Team premium seat can be billed annually and brings central billing and admin controls, which Max cannot do at all because it is a consumer plan sold monthly.
Your usage is spiky: quiet weeks, then a sprint
Pro plus Console API credits
Anthropic explicitly suggests switching to a Console account and buying API credits for intensive coding sprints. You keep the $200 a year floor and pay for the spikes only when they happen.
You want finished, reviewable work rather than more typing
A repo agent, not a bigger seat
Every tier on this page sells you more time at the keyboard. If what you actually need is a task taken end to end and returned as a pull request, no quota tier is the right purchase.
Where we fit, and where Claude Code beats us
The losses first, because they are real ones. Claude Code is an outstanding interactive tool. It sits in your terminal and your IDE, it holds a conversation about your codebase, it is genuinely good at exploratory work where you do not yet know what you want built, and on a Max plan it comes bundled with Claude for everything else you do in a day. Nothing we sell replaces that, and we would not pretend otherwise.
Agentcode is narrower on purpose. You connect a GitHub or GitLab repository on any hosting, describe a task, and the agent plans it, edits the code, runs your existing test suite and opens a pull request for a human to read. Claude Code Max plan: the questions people actually search
Is Claude Code Max worth it?
It is worth it when you hit the Pro cap during sessions rather than at the end of them, because at that point the plan is costing you working hours. If you see a limit warning once or twice a month, it is not worth it: annual Pro at $200 a year is the cheapest Claude Code seat Anthropic sells, and better context discipline usually buys back more headroom than $80 a month does.
Is Claude Code Max 20x worth it?
On pure arithmetic, Max 20x is the best value tier Anthropic sells to individuals. At $2,400 a year for twenty times Pro usage it works out at $120 per unit of Pro-equivalent usage, against $240 for Max 5x and $200 for annual Pro. If you are going to leave Pro at all, 20x is the jump that actually discounts the work.
Is Claude Code Max 5x enough?
For most developers who code a few hours a day, yes. Anthropic positions Max 5x for people who work with Claude frequently across a variety of tasks, and 20x for daily users who run it for most of their work. The honest test is where your cap hits land: if 5x pushes them from daily to monthly, it is enough. If they stay daily, you have bought a more expensive version of the same problem.
How much is the Claude Code Max plan?
Max 5x is $100 per month and Max 20x is $200 per month, both web prices, and Anthropic sells the Max plan as a monthly subscription only. There is no published annual price and no annual discount, so a year costs $1,200 or $2,400 at list. Anthropic notes that mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform.

How many tokens does the Claude Code Max plan include?
Anthropic does not publish a token or message count for Max. It publishes only a multiplier, five times or twenty times Pro usage, and Pro's own allowance is variable. Every specific figure you will read elsewhere, such as 225 or 900 messages per window, is a third-party estimate rather than a published number.
Is Claude Code Max unlimited?
No. Max raises the ceiling, it does not remove it. The five-hour session window and the weekly cap both still apply on Max 5x and Max 20x, and Anthropic's documented options when you reach them are to move up a tier, enable usage credits, buy API credits through a Console account, or wait for the reset.
Is Claude Code Max faster than Pro?
Not in the sense of faster responses. Max buys usage capacity and priority access to new models and features, not a quicker model. What it does change in practice is elapsed time on real work, because you stop losing hours to a cap in the middle of a task.
Claude Code Pro vs Max: what actually changes?
Only the amount of usage and the priority you get on new releases. The models are the same, Claude Code is the same, and the IDE support is the same. Pro can be billed annually at $17 a month; Max cannot be billed annually at all. That difference is why Max 5x ends up costing the same per unit of work as monthly Pro.
Claude Code Max plan vs API: which is cheaper?
Anthropic's own cost documentation puts Claude Code on API rates at around $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, with 90% of users under $30 per active day. Max 20x at $200 sits inside that range, so on averages they are close. The difference is shape: $200 is a ceiling, and an API month is a distribution with a long tail.
Can I get the Claude Code Max plan for free?
No. Anthropic states plainly that it does not offer standard discounted pricing on any paid plan including Max 5x and 20x, and that its support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons. Limited-time promotions happen occasionally and are announced through official channels, but there is no standing free or discounted route to Max.
Does Claude Code use my Max plan or my API key?
Your API key wins, silently. Anthropic documents that if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code authenticates with it instead of your subscription and you are charged API rates. If you have just upgraded to Max and the bill has not changed, unset that variable, run /logout, then log back in with your Claude credentials.
