Kiro vs Claude Code: Pricing, Spec Driven Development, Credits and Free Tier Compared
Both start at $20 a month for one developer, and that is where the useful part of the comparison begins rather than ends. One of those numbers is the most you can pay. The other is the start of a range. Every figure here was read from AWS's and Anthropic's own documentation in August 2026.

The short answer
Kiro and Claude Code cost about the same at the entry tier and stop being comparable above it, because only one of the two numbers is a ceiling. Kiro meters credits, a published unit of work sold at $0.04, with enterprise overage disabled by default, so a Kiro month tops out at the plan price: $0 for 50 credits, $20 for 1,000, $40 for 2,000, $100 for 5,000, $200 for 10,000. Claude Code comes with a Claude seat at $17 to $100 a month, and on Amazon Bedrock or the Console it is billed per token with no cap, which is why Anthropic's own documentation puts a developer at $150 to $250 a month. This is not a model comparison: Kiro runs Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Sonnet 4.6, and gives free users Sonnet 4.5. The real splits are that Kiro writes a reviewable spec (requirements.md, design.md, tasks.md) before it writes code and needs its own editor, while Claude Code attaches to the editor you already use and is the only one of the two you are permitted to drive from your own automation.
The split every other comparison skips
Almost every page in this search result puts $20 Kiro Pro next to $20 Claude Pro and calls it a tie. Those two twenties do not describe the same commitment. Read the first three rows and you have the decision.

One consequence deserves its own sentence, because it is what a finance team will ask you. A Kiro overrun is an engineering problem: the work stops and the invoice does not move. A metered Claude Code overrun is a finance problem: the work continues and the invoice does. Neither is the safe option. They put the risk in different departments. What a Kiro credit actually buys
Kiro is the side of this comparison with a countable unit, so it is the side you can forecast. It is also the side with rules that catch people out. All six of these are from Kiro's own billing FAQ or arithmetic on its own published rate.
A credit is a unit of work, not a prompt
Kiro says it plainly: "Simple prompts can consume less than 1 credit. More complex prompts, such as executing a spec task, typically cost more than 1 credit." Credits are metered to two decimal places, so the smallest possible charge is 0.01. Counting your prompts will not predict your bill.
The model you pick is the biggest lever
Kiro publishes one worked example: "a given task that consumes X credits to execute in Auto, will cost you 1.3X credits to execute via Sonnet 4.6." Auto mixes frontier and specialist models to balance quality against cost. Pinning a premium model is a 30% surcharge on that example alone.
Monthly credits expire, purchased credits do not
Plan credits reset on the 1st and "unused credits do not roll over to the next month". Add-on credits behave the opposite way: they "roll over and expire 12 months from the date of purchase". So a spiky team is better off on a smaller plan plus add-on packs than on a bigger plan it underuses.
Enterprise overage is off until someone turns it on
This is the single most useful line in Kiro's billing FAQ for anyone forecasting spend: "Overages are disabled by default and must be enabled in the Kiro console settings." Left alone, developers stop when the allowance runs out. That is a cost guarantee and a productivity risk in the same sentence.
The interface does not change the price
Kiro IDE, Kiro CLI, Kiro on the web and Kiro Crew all draw from the same credit balance, and the web preview adds "no separate charge for cloud compute". Kiro powers carry no additional charge either. So there is no cheaper surface to move work to.
The sign-up bonus is prorated, and enterprises usually miss it
The $20 first-upgrade credit is prorated by the days left in the calendar month, because Kiro bills on the 1st. Kiro's own example puts a June 15 upgrade at $10 rather than $20, so upgrading on the 1st is worth twice as much. It also requires social login or an AWS Builder ID and explicitly excludes AWS Identity Center, which is how most enterprises federate developers.
Kiro spec driven development against the way Claude Code works
Once the prices stop separating them, this table does. The headline difference is that Kiro insists on a written plan and its own editor, while Claude Code attaches to the setup you already have and can be scripted.

Worth saying clearly, because the search results imply otherwise: this is not a model comparison. Kiro's paid tiers run Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Sonnet 4.6, and the free tier runs Sonnet 4.5. You can pick either product and be running the same Anthropic model. What you are choosing between is a harness, a meter and an editor.
What ten developers cost on each
Using only published numbers. The Kiro column is plan price multiplied by heads, because Kiro publishes no team discount. The Claude column is Anthropic's own per-developer range, which is worth reading twice: it is a measured average from real deployments, not a price.

The fine print buyers find out later
None of this is hidden. All of it is in the vendors' own documentation and none of it is in the comparison articles.
- Kiro monthly credits do not roll over, but purchased add-on credits do and expire 12 months from the date of purchase.
- Kiro bills on the 1st of the calendar month, so the $20 first-upgrade bonus is prorated: Kiro's own example values a June 15 upgrade at $10.
- That bonus requires social login or an AWS Builder ID and explicitly excludes AWS Identity Center, so federated enterprise developers do not get it.
- Kiro in AWS GovCloud costs approximately 20% more, has no Free tier, and requires enterprise authentication via AWS IAM Identity Center.
- Kiro subscriptions cannot be shared. Each developer needs their own, and there is no discounted team rate published.
- Claude Code is not on the free Claude plan. The entry point is a Pro seat at $17 a month annually or $20 monthly.
- Claude Enterprise is "$20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates", so the seat price is a floor rather than the bill.
- On Amazon Bedrock the /logout command is unavailable, because authentication is handled through AWS credentials.
- On Amazon Bedrock the WebSearch tool is not available at all.
- Pin your Bedrock model versions before a team rollout. Anthropic warns that an unpinned "sonnet" alias on Bedrock resolves to Sonnet 4.5, which can lag the newest release.
- Bedrock model access needs approval first. With AWS Organizations you can submit it once from the management account and it extends to child accounts.
- Neither vendor's list prices include tax. Both state that separately.
Which one should you buy?
Buy Kiro if
You are an AWS shop, you want a hard ceiling on what a developer can spend, and you want the plan written down before the code is. Kiro Enterprise bills through AWS, overage is off until an admin enables it, and the spec workflow leaves requirements.md, design.md and tasks.md in the repository for someone other than the author to read. If your developers are on Amazon Q Developer today, the migration guide is first-party and short.
Buy Claude Code if
Your developers should stay in the editor and terminal they already use, you want to script the agent from your own pipeline, or you need the work to run inside your own AWS account on Bedrock for compliance. It attaches to an existing workflow instead of asking for a new IDE, and it is the only one of the two with a documented unattended path. Accept that on a metered deployment the bill is a distribution, not a number.
Buy neither if
What you actually want is finished, reviewable work rather than a faster way to write it yourself. Both of these put an agent in front of a developer who is still driving. If the outcome you keep asking for is a pull request that a human reads and merges, that is a different product shape, and it is the one we build.
Where we fit, and where both of them beat us
We sell a competing product, so take the losses first. Kiro's spec workflow is genuinely good and we do not have an equivalent: three reviewable files in the repo before code is written is a real artifact, and if you are already an AWS shop with Q Developer seats, the migration path and the AWS invoicing are advantages we cannot match. Claude Code has the deeper bench too: it runs in the editor your team already opens, it deploys inside your own AWS account on Bedrock for compliance, and it is scriptable. If either of those is the job you are hiring for, buy theirs.
What we do differently is the shape of the bill and the shape of the output. Agentcode takes a task against a connected GitHub or GitLab repository, plans it, edits the code, runs your test suite and opens a pull request for a human to read. It never merges on its own, so your branch protection and your reviewers stay exactly as they are. It costs $29 a month, flat. There is no credit balance draining in the background, no allowance that resets on the 1st, and no month where the invoice surprises you because someone ran a big refactor on the 28th.
That is a narrower product than either of these. It is the right one if what you keep wanting is finished, reviewable work rather than a faster way to write it yourself, and if a fixed line item matters more than a bigger menu. Kiro vs Claude Code: the questions buyers actually ask
Is Kiro better than Claude Code?
Neither is better in general, and they fail in different directions. Kiro is better when you want a fixed ceiling on spend and a written spec before code, because credits are a capped published unit. Claude Code is better when developers should stay in their current editor or you need to script the agent unattended, which Kiro does not permit.
Does Kiro use Claude?
Yes. Kiro's own pricing page lists Claude Opus 5, Opus 4.8, Sonnet 5, Sonnet 4.6, Sonnet 4.5 and Haiku 4.5 among the models paid plans can select, alongside OpenAI GPT-5.6 and open-weight models. The Free tier includes Claude Sonnet 4.5. So this is a comparison of harnesses and billing, not of models.
Does Kiro use Claude Code?
No. Kiro runs Anthropic models but it is a separate product built by AWS, with its own IDE, CLI, web and mobile surfaces and its own spec workflow. Claude Code is Anthropic's own agent. Sharing a model provider does not make one a wrapper around the other.
Can I use Kiro with Claude Code?
You can install both and use them side by side, but you cannot drive Kiro from Claude Code or from any other harness. Kiro's terms say use "through third-party automation harnesses that route requests outside of Kiro's native interfaces is not permitted". Two subscriptions, two workflows, no shared allowance.
Kiro vs Claude Code pricing: which is cheaper?
At the entry tier they are level, both $20 a month for one developer. Above that Kiro is cheaper to forecast rather than cheaper outright: its plans cap at $200 a month, while Anthropic publishes an average of $150 to $250 per developer per month on metered deployments, with no ceiling above it.
Can I use Kiro with Bedrock?
Not as a Bedrock model deployment. Kiro Enterprise is purchased and billed through AWS, so it lands on your AWS invoice, but you do not point Kiro at your own Bedrock account. Claude Code is the one that runs directly on Amazon Bedrock inside your account.
Can I use Kiro in VS Code or IntelliJ?
Not directly. A Kiro subscription covers the Kiro IDE, Kiro CLI, Kiro on the web, Kiro Crew and ACP-compatible editors. Adopting Kiro usually means adopting its editor. Claude Code is the alternative if keeping developers in VS Code or a JetBrains IDE is a requirement rather than a preference.

Kiro suits a team that wants a predictable per-developer ceiling and a spec another person can review. Claude Code suits a team that wants agents in existing editors and per-seat spend reports. If you deploy Claude Code on Bedrock, budget for OpenTelemetry, because per-user cost attribution is not included.
Does Kiro have a free tier?
Yes, a perpetual free tier with 50 credits a month, open-weight models and Claude Sonnet 4.5, subject to rate limits. It is not available in AWS GovCloud regions. Claude Code has no free tier at all: Anthropic states the free Claude plan does not include Claude Code access.
