The short answer

Codex and Cursor are not really the same kind of product, which is why the price tables mislead. Cursor is an editor you install that has an agent inside it. Codex is an agent that installs into the editor you already use, including into Cursor itself, which OpenAI documents as a supported setup. On price they match at the ends and diverge in the middle: both start at $20 and both charge $200 for 20x that allowance, but Codex runs on the free ChatGPT plan and has an $8 tier underneath, while Cursor charges $40 a team seat against Codex Business at $20. The sharpest practical difference is disclosure. Cursor publishes what your money buys in dollars, $20 of included model usage on Pro, $70 on Pro Plus and $400 on Ultra. OpenAI publishes message ranges that span a factor of ten, so a Codex budget cannot be built from its own documentation.

What is the difference between Codex and Cursor?

Most comparisons line these two up as rival coding assistants and score them on benchmarks. That framing hides the thing that actually decides the purchase. Cursor is a fork of VS Code, so buying it means moving your editor. Codex is an extension, a CLI, a web app and an iOS app, so buying it means adding something to the editor you already have. Everything below follows from that.

What you are buying A coding agent bundled into a ChatGPT subscription. There is no separate Codex product to buy, so the seat also covers everything else ChatGPT does. A code editor with an agent built into it, sold on its own. The seat is only useful to somebody who writes code.
Do you change editors No. It ships as an extension for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Xcode and JetBrains, plus a CLI, a web app and iOS. Yes. Cursor is a fork of VS Code, so you move your extensions, keybindings and settings into a different application.

Codex vs Cursor pricing: they match at the ends and split in the middle

Put the two lineups side by side and a pattern shows up that neither vendor advertises. Both start paid access at $20. Both sell a heavy individual tier at $200 that is worth 20x the $20 tier. In between, Cursor sells a $60 step and OpenAI sells a $100 one, and if you divide the extra cost by the extra multiples, both work out at $20 for each additional multiple of the entry allowance. The pricing teams have converged, whether or not they meant to.

Two rungs are worth acting on. At the bottom, Codex is genuinely free and Cursor is not really: Hobby gives you Cursor's own models but zero dollars of third-party model usage, so the frontier models most people came for are locked until you pay. What your money actually buys: dollars against message ranges

This is the part of the comparison worth reading twice, because it is the only place where one vendor gives you something the other simply does not. Cursor's documentation states the included third-party model usage in dollars for every tier. Divide it by the price and you get a number that tells you whether a tier is good value before you spend anything.

Now the same question asked of Codex. OpenAI does publish numbers, and they are more detailed than most vendors bother with, but they are message counts per model per rolling five hour window rather than a monthly total. Read the ranges rather than the midpoints: each one spans a factor of ten, which is OpenAI saying plainly that the shape of your task matters more than the tier you bought.

Put the two together and the practical conclusion is uncomfortable but useful: you can walk into a budget meeting with a Cursor number and you cannot walk into one with a Codex number. That is not a claim that Codex costs more. It is a claim that nobody, including OpenAI, will tell you in advance what it will cost you. The six things that actually decide it

Benchmark posts will tell you which model scored higher last month. That changes with every release. These six do not.

You do not have to choose, and OpenAI documents that

OpenAI's own IDE installation page lists Cursor beside VS Code, Windsurf, Xcode and JetBrains as a supported target for the Codex extension, with a cursor: protocol install link. So the honest framing is not Codex or Cursor. It is Cursor as the editor and whichever agent you prefer running inside it, which is a different and much cheaper decision.

Only one of them can be budgeted from published numbers

Cursor states the included model usage in dollars: $20 on Pro, $70 on Pro Plus, $400 on Ultra, with overage billed in arrears at the same rates. OpenAI states message ranges per five hour window, and every range spans a factor of ten. If your finance team needs a number before signing, Cursor gives you one and OpenAI does not.

The team seat is where the gap is real

At twenty developers, Codex Business is $400 a month billed annually and Cursor Teams Standard is $800. Then widen the frame: the ChatGPT Business seat is also useful to your finance, support and marketing people, and the Cursor seat is not. If your company was going to buy ChatGPT anyway, Codex arrives at a marginal cost of zero.

Model choice is the argument for Cursor and against it

Cursor routes across its own models and third-party frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, so you can send a refactor to one vendor and a review to another. Codex runs OpenAI models only. That flexibility is real, but it also means your bill moves with which model you picked, because different models burn the included allowance at different rates.

There is a Cursor markup almost nobody reports

On Teams and Enterprise plans, Cursor adds a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens on top of model API pricing for third-party model requests. It is in the docs and not on the pricing page. It is small per request and it is not small across a team running agents all day, so put it in the model before you compare seat prices.

Autocomplete is the thing Codex simply does not do

Cursor Tab is a separate product experience from the agent, and for a lot of developers it is the actual reason they pay. Codex has no equivalent. If you spend your day typing rather than delegating, that single missing feature outweighs every pricing table on this page.

Codex vs Cursor for a team: the seat maths

At twenty developers, Codex Business costs $400 a month billed annually and Cursor Teams Standard costs $800. That is the whole comparison at sticker price, and it is the largest single gap on this page. Cursor's answer is that a Standard seat carries a bigger included allowance and its Premium seat at $120 carries five times the agent limits, so a team of mixed intensity can buy three Premium seats and seventeen Standard ones rather than upgrading everybody. OpenAI's answer is workspace credits, topped up as needed.

Before you decide on that basis, widen the frame past the engineering org. A ChatGPT Business seat is useful to your finance team, your support team and your marketers, and a Cursor seat is useful to nobody who does not write code. Plenty of companies were going to buy ChatGPT anyway. In those companies Codex is not $20 a developer, it is $0 a developer, and the correct comparison is Cursor at $40 against free.

One more line item that belongs in the model and is missing from almost every comparison of these two. On Teams and Enterprise plans, Cursor applies a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens on top of the model's own API price for third-party model requests. It appears in the docs, not on the pricing page. Per request it rounds to nothing; across a team pointing agents at a large codebase all day it does not. The quotas are separate, the extension is supported, and $40 a month buys you both an editor with autocomplete and an agent with its own independent five hour window. What both of them leave to you

Codex and Cursor are both good, and they are both tools you sit with. You open them, you describe something, you watch, you steer. Each can run a longer task in the background and each is honest that the meter keeps moving while it does. That is the shared constraint: the more work you hand over, the faster the allowance drains, and the harder next month's invoice is to predict. Neither vendor publishes a plan whose cost does not move with how much you use it.

Cursor is better if you want autocomplete, multiple model vendors and a bill you can forecast in dollars. Codex is better if you want to keep your current editor, want a free or $8 way in, or are buying team seats, where it costs half as much. At the $200 tier they are the same price for the same 20x multiple, so that rung is decided on models rather than cost.

Is Codex better than Cursor?

Not universally. Codex wins on price at the free tier and at team scale, and on not making you change editors. Cursor wins on autocomplete, on access to Anthropic and Google models alongside OpenAI ones, and on publishing what your money buys. The two are close enough that the deciding factor is usually which of those you care about.

Can you use Codex in Cursor?

Codex vs Cursor vs Claude Code: which should you pick?

Pick Cursor if you want one editor that can reach every model vendor. Pick Codex if you already buy ChatGPT and want the agent to come to your editor. Pick Claude Code if you work in a terminal and want Anthropic models specifically. Claude Code and Codex are priced identically at every rung, so that pair is never decided on cost.

Is Codex CLI better than Cursor Agent?

They solve different problems. Codex CLI is the right tool for scripted and unattended work, including CI, where you can authenticate with an API key and pay per token instead of against a plan. Cursor Agent is built around the editor session, so it is stronger when you are iterating with the code in front of you.

If none of those bite within a month, you did not need it.
